GEEK TOOLS

This is just a bunch of technical tools that I think many network and computer professionals may find useful. Mostly they are simple Windows 2000 tools; this is in no way meant to be a comprehensive or high-end list of tools (espescially not the security tools), but rather a set of quick and easy things that can be used on your system and your network.

    • SpamBayes - Bayesian spam fielring in several plugin types
• Personal Firewalls
  • ZoneAlarm - Well known and easy to set up
  • Sygate Personal Firewall
  • Kerio Personal Firewall
• Full Firewalls
  • Smoothwall Express - a GPLed "lite" version of a corporate firewall, supports a DMZ, Ipsec VPNs, and Snort IDS
  • IPcop - a GPLed firewall branched from smoothwall with more features, but a slightly less polished interface
• Intrusion Detection Systems
  • Snort
  • IDS Center (requires Snort) - A frontend for Snort, requires a little know-how to get it working
  • SHADOW (requires Perl)- An open sourceNavy Intelligence project that uses a collection of Perl scripts
• Local Proxies
  • Privoxy - Tricky to configure and has a restrictive default ruleset, but blocks a lot of pop-ups and cookies
  • Webwasher Classic - Easier to configure but less powerful than Privoxy
• Spy/Adware removers
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - The best there is
  • Lavasoft Ad Aware - Never hurts to run over your system with both of these
• Rootkit finders
  • Rootkit Revealer - detects any software or files trying to (or accidentally) hide information from Windows
• Antivirus
  • Avast - A great antivirus package, free for home use
  • AVG Antivirus - Another critically acclaimed free-for-home antivirus
  • TrendMicro Housecall - Scan your computer over the web, good for quick scans but only works in IE
• Port Scanners
  • Superscan 4
  • Nmapwin
• Pasword Crackers
• Cain & Abel (uses winpcap) - An excellent general cracker that also pulls passwords from the network (can also do ARP spoofing)
• John the Ripper - Command line only and no ability to capture network passwords (you will have to use Ettercap or Ethereal), but far more powerful then Cain
• Local Hacking
  • NT Password Bootdisk - Can be used to edit the registry of an NT/2000/XP machine without booting into windows, but mostly just used to change lost admin passwords
• Vulnerability Scanners
• The Metasploit Project (requires Cygwin or Linux)
• Nessus (requires Cygwin or Linux)- The best out there, but it requires a Linux server to run it
• Sam Spade - Sort of a general network tool, but very useful for vulnerability probing
• Instant Messaging Protection
• Zonelabs IMsecure - Encrypts IM conversations
• Web Page
  • Enkoder Form - An online form that produces Javascript so you can put your e-mail on a website without getting bot/crawler spam
• Enumeration Tools
  • Somarsoft DumpSec - Can dump all kinds of information from an NT/2000 machine through NetBIOS or SMB
